Levels of Racism

The Levels of Racism

Racism has many levels that we need to remain aware of in our work
Structural racism is one level of the 4 primary levels of racism. It is a system in which public policies, institutional practices, cultural representations, and other norms work to routinely advantage whites while producing cumulative and chronic adverse outcomes for people of color. It is a system of hierarchy and inequity, primarily characterized as white supremacy – the preferential treatment, privilege, and power for white people at the expense of racially oppressed people. Structural racism is not something that a few people or institutions choose to practice. Instead, it is a feature of the social, economic, and political systems in which we all exist. It is interdependent, interacting and compounding.
